Located in the Northern part of the Caribbean where the Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico meet, Cuba has been an area of controversy for many years.
Cuba was a colony of Spain until 1898 when is became occupied by the united states and then in 1902 gained nominal independence. Since then there have been many different political leadership styles that have caused much debate, unrest and strain.
The tourism in Cuba has pulled the country into the news a lot over the last few decades and in fact from 1992 to 1997 it was illegal to have contact between tourists and the local Cuban people. Since this has been lifted there has been a real push to increase the tourism and now Cuba plays host to many holiday makers every year.
